CANDIDATE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (CDC)

Over the last five years our SCPD Candidate Development Committee’s mission has been the development and delivery of a training program for progressive candidates, campaign managers and treasurers, and campaign activists /volunteers. Our training covers every aspect of planning and conducting a campaign and our training presenters have extensive experience as campaign managers, candidates, and canvassers.

Our goal is to help build a progressive “bench” of candidates who will not only win elected offices at the local level, but will be prepared to run for offices at the state level or even in federal elections down the road.

Our full-day training sessions are offered twice a year and include the following topics:

• Fundraising – design fundraising plan; create call lists; how to make “the ask”
  ● Creating and delivering your campaign message.
  ● Campaign essentials organization-calendar, staff, volunteers, field, targeting-
  win number, campaign dos and don’ts.
  ● Effective Social Media
  ● Campaign Finance Requirements & Your Treasurer
  ● SCDP Resources for Your Campaign – Candidates’ Resource Manual

More recently the CDC has conducted video feedback training where participants prepare and present their stump speeches which are recorded on video. The participants then watch the videos together and candidates will self-assess their performances. The participants also provide feedback to each other. Revised stump speeches are then recorded and critiqued again.

In addition, the CDC conducts canvassing training not only for candidates, but also for Democratic clubs and progressive organizations. These training sessions focus on targeted canvassing, delivering the message at the door, and door knocking; the do’s and don’ts
