Last-minute voting

Dear SCPD Members and Friends,

We are writing to encourage you to hold steady these last few days before the election.  We know you have been working hard to preserve our democracy and fight for change that represents our progressive values.  You have called, written post cards, donated time and money, and encouraged your friends and family to get out and VOTE! Many of you waited hours in line to vote.  Still more of you have mailed in your ballots from home.

Ohio law provides that any ballot postmarked by Monday which arrives within 10 days of November 3 should be counted.  However, we all know the delivery times of the postal service have slowed (Akron mail now goes to Cleveland to be sorted, then is driven back to Akron for delivery).  SCPD urges our members to drop your ballots at the drop box at the Board of Elections as soon as possible to avoid any delays.  The drop box can be accessed 24 hours a day and is located at 470 Grant Street in Akron.

If you still plan to mail your ballots DO NOT DELAY. Your ballot must be postmarked by Monday.  Driving up to a mailbox and dropping your ballot off may not ensure a postmark.

The Board of Elections web site advises that “If you are returning your voted ballot by mail during the week before Election Day, you should take it to USPS no later than the day before Election Day (Monday, November 2) and ensure it receives a postmark. If you use a postage label purchased at a USPS customer service window or vending machine, the date on the label is the postmark. This is the USPS-recommended way to postmark your ballot. If you use postage stamps, ask that it be postmarked.” This means you should go into the post office, hand your ballot to a clerk, and ask that the clerk postmark your ballot.
